Le Terroir at 5 Place aux Herbes for lunch -
The conversation burbled on around me like little musical notes dancing off the staff. I let my eyes do the talking, taking little snapshots of the view from our table, my camera resting otherwise in my lap. Our food arrived just as my stomach was starting to rumble and I enjoyed my delicious gratin du jour, the cheese bubbling over smoky eggplant to warm me up from the inside so that I no longer needed the polar fleece blanket placed with consideration on the arm of my chair.
We all knew our good fortune at being able to eat outside in February and so we stayed. A second bottle of wine was ordered as it was sold à la ficelle, literally by the string so that you paid only for the level of how much you drank. Because honestly, we just wanted to linger, to pull the moment like the sweet taffy it was.
Try le Tracteur in nearby Argilliers for dinner.
Hidden away in sleepy Argilliers(and rather hard to find!) is this gem of a restaurant. Outside, a little gravel-paved courtyard with tables, plum-coloured wall and a fig tree full of lanterns: here one eats in summer. Inside, a sleek open kitchen where the calm chef can be seen loading dishes. Menu is €29 for three courses, exquisitely presented (vélouté of aubergine was adorned with stuffed courgette flowers, slices of radish and wisps of salad; melt in the mouth marinated tuna and tomatoes; followed by perfectly cooked sea bass or beef cheek with aubergine confit; then cheese or chocolate ganache with raspberries and roasted figs or pear and strawberry crumble with goat's cheese cream). A delightful experience – brilliant value and smooth service – and we longed for it to go on for ever. Full to the brim: you must book.
How about an inexpensive option in AVIGNON?
L'idylle du Palais: little cafe and creperie
Rest assured that there is absolutely no shortage of places to eat in Avignon: but many of the options - particularly along Rue de la Republique and in Place de l'Horloge can be crowded, fairly expensive and somewhat 'samey'.
Which is why this unassuming little creperie just off Place du Palais was such a lovely find. As well as a whole range of savoury and sweet pancakes, it also serves a range of salads and the usual range of cafe style food such as croques messieurs/mesdames. The location is shady and the cafe is located just down the road from a nice series of gift/craft stores, which are tempting to peruse before or after your meal.
Restaurant Le Vieux Castillon in Castillion du Gard
The restaurant is a reference in the region. Recognized by the best guides, it offers Provence's colors and flavors and the richness of its local cuisine. The service is attentive and discreet, and you can enjoy the sweetness of an evening on the terrace during the warm or mid season. The winery has some 200 references and our bar has a fireplace to make your appetizers warm during autumn evenings.
